The List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE)
Overview and guidance for this database. Use SecureEPLS to screen quickly and confidently.
The Office of Inspector General has the authority to exclude individuals and entities from Federally funded
health care programs and maintains the List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE). Anyone who hires an
individual or entity on the LEIE may be subject to civil monetary penalties.
- Why it matters: Items or services ordered, prescribed, or furnished by excluded
individuals/entities are non‑payable and may trigger civil monetary penalties.
- What to verify: First/last name and aliases, NPI, date of birth, specialty, exclusion type
(e.g., 1128(a)/(b)), and any reinstatement date.
- Update cadence: OIG LEIE is updated monthly. Screen at hire/contracting and monthly
thereafter.
- Compliance tips:
- Integrate LEIE checks into credentialing and re‑credentialing workflows.
- Hold claims tied to a positive match and document remediation steps (schedule removal, access
deactivation).
- Archive dated search results and match dispositions for at least 7 years.
